Prawns Biriyani

This recipe is from my friend’s mom who is an excellent cook like any other mom. It used to be our favourite along with loads of memories.

First time I ( included my friend from hostel) had this was for a post midnight welcome dinner. We had arrived after our college project, travelled from Pune to Bombay, all tired, worked up and hungry as ever, made it to her house and Aunty serves us this yummy dinner. It has been my favourite since then.

I always hesitated to try prawns biriyani from outside but after this dinner all my anticipations were out.

This was my first attempt at this. Recipe was passed by my friend. Though did not come as good as her mum made but I would say it was not that bad

PS : I don’t know to clean prawns or rather would say I have not tried so got my roomie to clean it 😉.

  1. Basmati rice- 1 cup Wash rice and drain all water
  2. Oil
  3. Your choice of whole spices & bay leaves
  4. Cumin seeds
  5. Onion pste – 2
  6. Garlic – 5-6 cloves
  7. Ginger – as required
  8. Prawns
  9. Tomato paste – 1 – 2
  10. Curd half bowl
  11. Chilli powder – 2 tsp
  12. Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
  13. Chopped coriander leaves

Marinate the prawns with little spice powders and keep it aside.

Take a pan and heat oil, add cumin and bay leaves and whole spices.
Add rice and just fry for two minutes. Add boiling water and cook till half cooked.
Make a paste of onion, cloves of garlic and one tiny piece of ginger.
Fry the paste in oil till it turns golden brown. Add tomato paste and mix some more till it starts leaving oil.
Keep the gas low, now add prawns and let it semi cook.
Mix curd with a little salt and beat it and add the curd to the prawn mix keeping the gas still on low.

Add chilli powder garam masala (aunty had her special home made masala which made the whole difference) and salt and the boiled rice with spices and mix gently. Cover with lid and Steam for some time till rice is fully cooked
Add coriander leaves n serve.
